Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge has a long and beautiful history starting with the region’s Indigenous Peoples, colonists, and the U.S. Army. Since the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife received the land in 1974, it has been an important place for the protection of many wildlife species, with a special focus on migratory birds. Species of particular importance include the American woodcock and Massachusetts’ threatened Blanding’s turtle.
