Nora Brown with Stephanie Coleman and Dirk Powell with Amelia Powell Live at Groton Hill
November 24, 2024 @ 7:00 pm
Americana performers Nora Brown with Stephanie Coleman and Dirk Powell with Amelia Powell live at the Groton Hill Music Center on Sunday, November 24 at 7:00pm.
First brought together by Brooklyn’s old-time music community in 2017, Nora Brown and Stephanie Coleman share a rich musical partnership that belies their 20 year age difference. Nora is a banjo player, and has released 4 albums on Brooklyn based Jalopy Records. She has performed across the US, Europe and Japan including NPR’s Tiny Desk and TED EDU. Stephanie is a master old-time fiddler, having recorded with and toured internationally over the last two decades with celebrated artists such as trailblazing all-women stringband Uncle Earl, Watchhouse’s Andrew Marlin, and clawhammer banjo virtuoso Adam Hurt. Nora and Stephanie recorded together on Nora’s debut album Cinnamon Tree in 2019, and have performed as a duo in the US and London. Most recently they preformed together as a duo on NPR’s Tiny Desk and have released a new duo EP called Lady of the Lake.
Dirk and Amelia Powell are a daughter/father duo with strong roots in the bayous of Louisiana and the mountains of Kentucky. Amelia’s grandfather Dewey Balfa was known as a premier Cajun fiddler and cultural ambassador. She grew up experiencing the deep center of that tradition while simultaneously exploring the old-time music of her Appalachian heritage with her father, Dirk, who learned banjo, fiddle, and guitar from his own grandfather, J.C. Hay. Amelia is known for her hard-driving guitar playing and soulful vocals. Together, they perform music of their heritage, write and craft original songs, and bring audiences the kind of soulful connection that comes from family playing together with trust, humor, and love.
